"Reconstruction Learning target".

1. I can explain why Reconstruction failed.
  • Johnson was for the 13th amendment but didn't want freedman to have civil rights.
  •  Once free Freedman didn't have any thing so they turned to sharecropping which eventually lead them into debt and poverty.
2. I can explain how the Dred Scott decision lead to the civil war.
  • Dred Scott did not get civil rights.
  • Abolitions were angry about the decision, but people for slavery were excited about the decision.
3. I can explain the differences between the 2 major political parties during Reconstruction.
  • Radical Republicans wanted to end slavery and let every citizen have civil rights.
  • Johnson wanted to keep slavery and only let whites have civil rights.

 4. I can state 3 Reconstruction Amendments and their necessity
  • 13th Amendment abolished slavery.
  • 14th Amendment allowed equal protection among all citizens.
  • 15th Amendment gave the right for any male citizen the right to vote.

5.  I can articulate the differences between the 2 major political parties during Reconstruction.

  • President Johnson Reconstruction allowed the confederates power back over the south
  • Johnson also did little to help the Freedman .
  • Johnson wanted to ratify the 13th amendment which abolished slavery.

  • Radical Republicans wanted to punish the confederacy.
  • RR also did a lot to help the Freedman.
  • RR also want Freedman to have civil rights like white citizens.

"Reconstruction: The Perfect Failure"

The reconstruction did not fail to protect the FREEDMAN because FREEDMAN did not get CIVAL RIGHTS. Many FREEDMAN where not treated equal like white citizen's. BLACK CODES were passed by southern states in 1865 and 1866 after the civil war. These laws restricted black people freedom. In 1890 Louisiana passed a law which states blacks and whites couldn't ride on the same train. Homer Plessy a free man was seven-eights white but was still required to ride in the colored car. On June 7, 1892 Plessy bought an first class ticket in the white section and was asked to move. Plessy refused and was remanded for trail. In the  PLESSY V.S FERGUSON case Plessy argued the Louisiana law denied his rights under the 13th AMENDMENT. Plessy was convicted and was fined $25.

After Lincoln assentation  ANDREW JOHNSON became president and was left with the reconstruction of the US. Republicans told Johnson that southern states were economically in chaos and urged him to protect the rights of FREEDMAN. But Johnson didn't care. FREEDMAN were treated unfair and did not get most civil rights and that's why I think the reconstruction failed.
